Pricey DIY Disasters

Downing Street’s White House –style press briefings were scrapped this week after it had spent £2.6 million on a purpose built panelled studio.

We’ve all been there – spent too much on a regretful renovation project, that is. Three in five peopled surveyed by the insurer Aviva said that they had renovated their home since the pandemic begun, but 44 percent of them were unhappy with the results. The insurer estimates that homeowners spent £676 on average on each regretted project, and that they will spend another £716 putting it right. The home insurer Churchill reported that this was due to tradespeople being able to enter a homeowner’s property, but this is allowed under current rules.

Churchill’s research shows that it is cheaper to get a professional to tackle these projects in the first place. As interior designers we are often best placed to help homeowners through these dilemmas, and come up with the solutions to answer the problems encountered.

Further evidence from the survey’s showed that most of the these DIYers “thought it was a small job and the majority (57%) didn’t seek any advice. Perhaps like the press briefing room mishap it is always advisable and can save time and expense in the long run to seek professional advice.
