Theatre, entertainment, escapism, wellbeing and sociability are all set to change when the pub and restaurants are able to open again. 

This offers an ideal opportunity to implement any interior design changes, which may have already taken place across many of these sectors already, but without doubt it is a crunch time for these sectors.

Interior design has always been about setting new benchmarks. The world has changed so many ways in early 2020, and it will no doubt need changes for the rest of the year.

These sectors have always been unsure about whether to look back and reclaim their roots or look forward and find a brave new way.  The sector used to be just about feeding people, now it also feeds lifestyles. People don’t go to restaurants to just eat anymore, they go for the sociability of the occasion. This will even more important as we adapt.

Being in tune with people

The sector will need to adapt to the way people are living and design spaces which work for that, in general, they will need to be brighter, more optimistic, more confident, more go ahead, To cut a new way, and reinvent themselves from a design perspective. 

There will still need to be a sense of fun, involvement, community welcomes, great comforting food and great design which really smashes home all these things. The design style will need to fit the direction and aspiration.

Dining areas will need to be adjusted, but still find a way to create a food and beverage experience that engages and entertains customers. There are a number of screen manufacturers for instance, which produce both visually attractive, but acoustically great products to help divide and zone a space. As well as using layouts and strategically placed furniture. 

Offering honesty.

Any changes to the interior will need to offer honesty and fitting with it’s environment. If you look at Dishoon, they have been to India to source from there. It’s like you open the door and you are in Delhi or Bombay because everything is realistic and there is honesty, but with an overlay of sophistication. 

You can find your own niche, something you can talk about and base your scheme on. In tomorrow’s environment, ‘wellbeing” in spaces will be very much on trend to imbue a sense of safety. People will seek out spaces that they see as sanctuaries, places that they can fell calm and clear minded. But also bringing out those “hot chocolate moments’. The space will not only be about how the space looks, but how it feels to all the senses.

There will also be a draw towards sustainability, and local sourcing, supporting other local traders and suppliers. 

The well being trend

Everyone is talking about creating his or her own level of escape. Nooks, snugs, secret spaces and private booths will be the next big thing. Deep sofas, indulgent natural materials and textures, with colour schemes are set to complement this trend. 

Greens, as well as soft, pale Nordic colours will be influential, along with metallic elements such as mirrors and copper. 

Consumer experiences

Experience is also expected to be a trend. Like coffee shops roasting their own beans. Microbreweries or local brewed beer will all be part of the experience for the consumer. They will want to know also what they are eating is fresh and unique, not mass-produced. Incorporating the product into Interior Design is also something that should be considered. It might be the ideal time to look outside the traditional flocked wallpaper, swirly carpet and old-fashioned décor. 

This might be the time, whilst have the time, to consider pushing the boundaries of design to consider, theatre, entertainment, escapism, well being and sociability which will change the way this sector is viewed. You maybe should see this as an opportunity to break the rules.
